INTRODUCTIONS

APRIL 2010 ALREADY! IT FEELS LIKE JUST YESTERDAY WE WERE ENJOYING THE CHRISTMAS BREAK, SOAKING UP THE SUN-FOR THE FEW DAYS IT CAME OUT AND PIGGING OUT ON CHRISTMAS PUDDING, HAM, TURKEY AND TRIFLE! BEFORE WE GET STARTED WE WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO THE NINETWENTY TEAM.

FRAN HUME

FRAN HUME

Fran Hume has joined 920 Auckland and will be working closely with key accounts and development of the Sales, Product Marketing and Management sector.

Fran has returned to the IT Recruitment industry following a personal break, where she started, grew and recently sold her own successful business. Previously, Fran had worked in the IT & T Industry for 20years +, and enjoyed a senior recruiting position with Hudson Auckland, specializing in the IT & T  Sales, Marketing & Management sector.

Fran successfully placed a number of significant CEO and General Management positions, as well as working at senior level with key clients, such as Telecom NZ, Hewlett Packard, Toshiba and large IT distribution companies.

GWYNN WILLIAMS

GWYNN WILLIAMS

Gwynn Williams has joined Ninetwenty Wellington and is working alongside Shane, Charlie and Adelaide in the Contracting space.

Having worked in the advertising industry for 9 years Gwynn decided to change his career path and entered into the NZ recruitment industry 2 years ago. "I had known of 920 through working on joint accounts over the last two years.  920 has a focus on achieving fast, quality results for their clients and a collaborative approach to client servicing which is something that resonates with me. I am looking forward to achieving success for both my clients, team and on a personal level with 920."

We are very excited to have these two new additions on board!

Wellington IT Market Update

THE WELLINGTON IT MARKETPLACE HAS BOUNCED BACK WELL ESPECIALLY IN THE LEVEL OF PERMANENT VACANCIES AVAILABLE COMPARED TO A LACK OF PERMANENT VACANCIES FOR THOSE WANTING SOME SECURITY. THE DEMAND FOR CONTRACTORS IS STILL STRONG IN CERTAIN SECTORS.

We are seeing public sector and telecommunications organisations being relatively conservative at the moment when it comes to adding FTE’s versus the software vendors and financial services arena’s which are looking to kick start large on-going initiatives.

From a skill-set point of view, there has been a significant demand for Business and Systems Analysts which is a pleasing sign as typically they are involved in the early stages of initiatives / projects. Other skill-sets which are in demand on the permanent side are Enterprise Architects, SQL DBA’s, Test Analysts, Test Consultants and MOSS Developers / Architects.

Auckland IT Market Update

THE AUCKLAND IT MARKET RETURNED FROM THE CHRISTMAS BREAK AT QUITE A PACE! THE PROGNOSIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD FOR 2010, HOWEVER JANUARY AND FEBRUARY ARE TRADITIONALLY QUIET MONTHS AS MANAGERS RETURN TO WORK AFTER THE SUMMER BREAK, BEGIN TO FORMULATE PLANS FOR THE YEAR AND PRIORITISE PROGRAMMES AND PROJECTS.

We have been encouraged by the fact that January and February in particular have been very busy, and it seems that organisations are wasting no time getting projects underway.

Sector wise, we have seen the most activity across utilities, manufacturing and financial sectors. Many large scale programmes of work have gathered momentum in early 2010, and look like they will last well into the second half of the year.

Words of wisdom from the boss

IT’S “COUNTER OFFER” SEASON…

… AND I RECKON IT’S A MUGS GAME FOR BOTH THE EMPLOYER AND THE EMPLOYEE.

The counter offer is a knee jerk by employers to suddenly show their respect to an employee by promising the world will change and here is some money to accompany the promise. For the employee it’s often either a bargaining chip for a few extra dollars or a last chance extension of their tolerance for the employer.

The fact is that it only has a 20% chance of success for either party. 80% of the time the employee and the employer have parted ways within six months, FACT!

THE INSIDE TRACK ON RECRUITER’S – TOP 10 TIPS

JOB SEEKERS – DO YOU WANT A SURE FIRE WAY TO GET RECRUITER’S TO CALL YOU BACK? TO BE PROACTIVE? TO WORK FOR YOU?

(Please Note: this article is courtesy of Phil Rosenberg, a US Recruiter and industry blogger. We thought you might find his perspective interesting?)

It's so simple, and so few candidates do this. The higher up on the management chain the candidate is, the more effective they can be using this strategy. Interestingly, the higher up on the management chain the candidate is, the LESS LIKELY they are to actually do this! It's such an easy way to stand out, such an easy way to get priority and additional help from recruiter’s.

Unfortunately, reaction to a difficult job market causes many candidates to take out their frustrations on recruiter’s - this is counter-productive for the candidate. It's not a recruiter's job to help candidates, but they can provide tremendous help if they wish to help you.

SOCIAL MEDIA AS PART OF BACKGROUND CHECKING

THIS IS AN INTERESTING ARTICLE LOOKING AT THE ETHICS OF USING WHAT IS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN TO ASSESS CANDIDATES. THERE IS A SUB-DISCUSSION ON DISCLOSURE AND RELEVANCE.

Right now the Australian online recruitment community have started a debate/discussion about the concept of using the content from social media as part of background checking.

Social media provides hiring managers a unique insight into candidates before they join the organisation. Now I agree last Saturday night’s drunken party photos have no place in the recruitment process, well maybe they do let’s see where this goes.

Social media is now providing us with tangible evidence of how many people lack (or fail to demonstrate) the basic skills required to get along well in the playground. And these are the same skills we need to work successfully with other grown-ups, both online and offline.

10 Things to do in 2010

COMPILED BELOW IS A LIST OF DEVELOPMENT IDEAS FOR ORGANIZATIONS TO EXPERIMENT WITH IN 2010. IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER HERE ARE ‘10 THINGS TO DO IN 2010’:

1. HAVE AN HR/TALENT MANAGEMENT/ RECRUITING APPLICATION BLUEPRINT

The IT environment in many organizations is complex and needs constant management, even in the smallest of organizations. To help with managing the complexity ensure you have a strategy/roadmap/blueprint to follow.

2. LEARN ABOUT SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)

It seems finally organizations are starting to take note of the value that can be achieved from a decent career’s web site. While content and design are critical understanding a bit about SEO can help your jobs appear in the elusive number 1 spot of search results. Even if you do not have a career’s web site having your personal brand appear in search results can be a great thing.

3. IMPLEMENT A WORKFORCE PLANNING PROGRAM, WITH A FOUNDATION AROUND COMPETENCIES

The recent CedarCrestone HR Technology survey found that organizations who were using workforce planning and competency management tools had significantly higher sales growth than those that did not. While they say they are not suggesting causality but over the last few years there has been stronger linkage between sales growth and these areas.

4. THINK BEYOND FACEBOOK AND TWITTER WHEN LOOKING AT SOCIAL MEDIA

With so much talk about Facebook and Twitter I feel people have forgotten that social media is more than just these two sites. Remember social media is about user generated content, including blogs, images, video, audio, ratings, reviews etc.

  The hottest gadgets for 2010

2010 IS GOING TO BE AN EXCITING YEAR FOR TECHNOLOGY! HERE ARE THE HOTTEST UP AND COMING GADGETS THAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE THIS YEAR…

Nickon S1000PJ

NICKON S1000PJ

Virtually all handsets come with mobile cameras in today's market, but it's widely accepted a stand-alone device will generally deliver a better result than a lens used within a phone's framework.

The Nikon Coolpix S1000PJ is one of the hottest of its kind. The camera itself delivers 12.1-megapixel quality images, with a 2.7-inch viewing monitor, while the Nikon image processing technology renders these images within the camera itself.

It also comes in a silver or black casing, along with a 5x zoom lens. A new type of automode allows the camera to automatically choose the best setting based on the contents of a photograph, while five extra functions reduce blur and the effect of shaking.

But the camera's draw card is its projection technology. The S1000PJ gives customers the ability to instantly share photos and videos by including a one-touch projection technology. Users simply point the camera towards a flat surface, and photos and images can then be shown on a screen up to 40 inches long – a feature sure to impress tech-heads.
