I have recently joined 920 as a Senior IT Recruitment Consultant in the Wellington market. 920 offers me the perfect environment to better serve my clients and candidates alike. NATHAN MASTERS - 920 WELLINGTON GENERAL MANAGER UPDATES US ON WHAT WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEING IN THE WELLINGTON IT MARKET... |
|
The Wellington IT marketplace remains buoyant especially in the Software Development space where there is a large demand for .NET and Java Developers.
The IT vendors and services community are extremely active as it seems more government related work is being tendered to the vendors / services firms rather than it being done in-house.
A number of large organisations both public and private sector are having new CIOs’ in place which typically means a small window of ‘getting the feet underneath the table’ and then typically comes a period of change.
Contracting is still stable and the demand for contract Business Analysts and Test Analysts has been constant in the last two months and we foresee the need for contractors to increase given the skill shortage in some areas of the IT marketplace, especially when we see the Australian IT marketplace getting tighter and tighter.

JOHN BAILEY - 920 AUCKLAND GENERAL MANAGER UPDATES US ON WHAT'S CURRENTLY HAPPENING IN THE AUCKLAND MARKET... |
|
My initial predictions of continuing strong growth in the contract market and stability on the permanent front have not materialised. In fact, we are currently experiencing a reverse trend with many organisations, historically oriented to contract resource, now more focussed on the hiring of permanent staff. That said, there is such volatility in the market at present, we could present a very different scenario in two weeks time.
Within the current trend however, candidates are experiencing some frustration with the ‘slowness’ of many organisations to progress candidates. In this market, if the commitment to hire lacks urgency, candidates will seek opportunities elsewhere... and good candidates will not lack opportunities. Biztalk, technical and process BAs, web developers... all these skillsets are in short supply. Counter offers are rife. At the other end of the scale, there is an abundance of senior management people vying for the few opportunities available at this level.
In short, cautious optimism and circumspection prevail.

CHECK OUT NINETWENTY'S STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ACING THAT JOB INTERVIEW! INCLUDES 'BEFORE THE INTERVIEW', 'THE INTERVIEW' AND 'AFTER THE INTERVIEW' TIPS AND A 'DON'T' SECTION. IN THIS MARKET YOU NEED TO STAND OUT FROM ALL THE OTHER CANDIDATES AND MAKE THAT LASTING IMPRESSION ON THAT POTENTIAL EMPLOYER! YOU WILL WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE... |
|
BEFORE THE INTERVIEW... 1. You can never be too prepared for a job interview! Check out the company’s website, do some internet research and ask your consultant questions. Get a good understanding of the company’s background, products/services, locations and competitors. The question “what do you know about our company” will almost always be one of the first questions the interviewer asks.
2. Look over the job description thoroughly. Think of possible questions you may be asked and also identify examples from your background that refer back to the job description and demonstrate your ability to do the job.
3. Put together a couple of samples of your work that illustrate your skills. Don’t bring too many samples as this can count against you if they’re pulling out too much info.
4. Think through likely questions that you will be asked… Some of these could include…

DUCKING RESPONSIBILITY OR SHIFTING BLAME WHEN A PROJECT GOES WRONG IS UNPROFESSIONAL - IT WON'T WIN YOU ANY POINTS WITH YOUR BOSS EITHER.
HERE ARE 10 COMMON EXCUSES THAT EMPLOYEES GIVE THEIR MANAGERS - AND HOW YOU CAN TURN THEM FROM WEAK EXCUSES INTO A WAY OF GETTING YOUR SUPERVISOR TO HELP YOU RESOLVE THE PROBLEMS BEFORE YOUR PROJECT IS JEOPARDIZED... |
|
There are lots of reasons why a project might not be going well or may even fail. When your boss wants to know why, there is a world of difference between offering an excuse and providing a legitimate reason. In truth, most excuses only make your manager more upset and put the blame on you.
1: I didn’t understand the assignment Not every boss has great communication skills. And yes, having a manager who is not good at explaining what needs to be done makes life difficult. At the same time, using your boss’ inability to explain things as an excuse for not doing them just does not fly. If an assignment does not make sense, it’s your responsibility to find out what really has to happen. And if you find yourself in this situation more than once, it is a sign that you need to be extra careful when working with this particular person to get things fully understood.
2: The deadline was impossible We all know this situation: A manager hands you an assignment with a deadline attached to it. You tell the manager that the deadline can’t be met and you’re told, “I don’t care; make it happen.” When the deadline is missed, you say, “But I told you the deadline was impossible!” and the boss is still angry. The disconnect here is that simply saying that the deadline is not possible is not good enough. As soon as the boss tells you to do it and you passively accept the ridiculous deadline, you make it your responsibility to meet it.
